Athletic Therapy & Massage Therapy

Athletic Therapy is not just for athletes, it is for everyone!! If you experience aches and pains, acute or chronic injuries, or just want to better your strength and functional ability then Athletic Therapy is for YOU!

My AT & RMT treatments are very similar – a mix of manual work, self mobilization and/or exercise. The goal is to find the cause of your pain and treat that cause.

Athletic Therapy

The following is an excerpt from the Canadian Athletic Therapy Association website:

“Certified Athletic Therapists are best known for their quick-thinking on-field emergency care of professional and elite athletes. The first to respond when someone gets hurt, they are experts at injury assessment and rehabilitation. It’s that same mix of on-site care and active rehabilitation skills that makes Athletic Therapists so effective in treating the musculoskeletal (muscles, bones, and joints) injuries of all Canadians, whether on the field or in the clinic.

The scope of practice of a Certified Athletic Therapist starts with the in-depth knowledge, education and training in the areas of the human musculoskeletal system, exercise physiology, biomechanics, and basic emergency care.

Athletic therapists adhere to the Sports Medicine Model of care. They treat a wide range of patients, from kids with concussions to seniors recovering from hip replacement surgery, using various manual therapies, modalities, exercise prescription and even bracing and taping. The treatment varies but the objective doesn’t: an Athletic Therapist’s goal is to help clients return to their usual activities, whether that means playing competitive sports or walking to the mailbox and back.”

What to expect during your assessment: An assessment will include filling out forms and discussion of health history in general as well as specifically regarding the reason you’re seeking treatment. Your movement will be assessed in a variety of ways including: how you move, how the joint moves when you are completely relaxed, how strong muscles are, if there are muscle imbalances, as well as some special testing of various structures to narrow down what may be the cause of your pain/complaint. As far as treatment goes, various techniques will be applied based on the assessment findings. This will all be discussed with you and you will consent to the treatment plan and techniques prior to being treated. If at any time before, during, or after treatment you have every right to decide to discontinue treatment.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is very beneficial in reducing stress, stiffness, and pain. Whether it is deep tissue, trigger point, or relaxation techniques, after an assessment we will discuss your treatment plan. Each person has different needs so each treatment plan is tailored to those needs. It is incredibly important to have open communication with your massage therapist regarding your comfort with techniques, pressure, as well as keeping your medical health records updated. Massage can be performed with lotion or oil directly on the skin or without lotion or oil through clothing.

If you have an injury, a stressful job, or just want to treat yourself to relaxation, massage therapy is for you.

The following is an excerpt from the College of Massage Therapist of Ontario website:

“Massage therapy consists primarily of hands-on manipulation of the soft tissues of the body, specifically, the muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints for the purpose of optimizing health.

Massage therapy treatment has a therapeutic effect on the body and optimizes health and well-being by acting on the muscular, nervous and circulatory systems. Physical function can be developed, maintained and improved; and physical dysfunction and pain and the effects of stress can be relieved or prevented through the use of Massage Therapy.”
